Why Are My Windows Still Cloudy After Cleaning?

Windows that stay cloudy after cleaning have one of two problems: a film that’s still on the glass, or damage that no cleaning can fix. Clean a small spot on each side, and the haze that’s left tells you which one you have.

Which side is the haze on? A two-minute test

First, find out where the haze lives. You need a damp microfiber cloth and a dry one.

  1. Pick a cloudy pane you can reach from the ground on both sides.
  2. Clean a hand-sized patch inside, then dry it. If it turns clear, the haze is on the inside.
  3. Still there? Clean the same spot outside. If it clears now, the haze is on the outside.
  4. Still cloudy with both sides wiped? Run a dry fingertip across each side. Rough or gritty glass has mineral buildup or etching on the surface. On a double-pane window, smooth glass on both sides means the haze is between the panes.

What each result means

  • Clears inside: an everyday film like cooking grease, smoke or fingerprints. Cleanable.
  • Clears outside: dust, pollen or smoke film. Cleanable.
  • White spots or a rough crust outside that won’t wipe away: hard water from sprinklers. Often treatable, but not always all the way.
  • Rough and cloudy even after the hard water is treated: etched glass. Permanent.
  • Fine lines that catch the light: scratches. Permanent.
  • Smooth on both sides, still foggy: a failed seal, which no cleaning fixes.
  • Fog on the room side that wipes off wet: indoor moisture condensing on cold glass, not dirt.

Why is there fog between my window panes?

Fog, droplets or a white haze between the two panes of a double-pane window isn’t dirt: it means the seal around the edge has failed. Moisture got into the space between the glass, where nothing can reach it from either side. It often comes and goes with the weather, and over time it can leave a cloudy film inside for good.

We don’t repair seals or windows, and no amount of cleaning can fix a failed seal. When we find one, we note it, like any damage we find. Check your window paperwork to see if a warranty covers the glass, or call a window company about it.

High pressure is hard on seals, so we never pressure wash windows; we clean every one by hand with a squeegee. Here’s why we never pressure wash windows.

Why is the inside of my window hazy?

Inside haze is almost always a film from everyday life, and you often don’t notice it until the low winter sun shines through. Common causes:

  • Cooking film on windows near the kitchen.
  • Smoke from fireplaces, wood stoves, candles and cigarettes.
  • Nose prints and handprints, right at pet and kid height.
  • Old glass cleaner that never got fully wiped off.

Warm water with a little dish soap cuts most of these better than glass spray. If the glass is high, over the stairs, or there’s a lot of it, our interior window cleaning scrubs the film off and squeegees every pane dry by hand.

Why is the outside of my window cloudy?

In the Treasure Valley, outside haze that won’t wipe off is usually hard water from sprinklers. Hard water is high in dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. Sprinklers hit the same lower panes all summer, the sun dries each drop where it lands, and the minerals build into white spots and a cloudy crust that glass cleaner won’t touch.

Hosing windows off with hard tap water and letting them air-dry does the same thing on a smaller scale. Our Monthly and Quarterly memberships come with RainBlock, our pure water rinse: water filtered down to zero minerals, so the glass dries spot-free with no soap or residue left behind for dirt to cling to. RainBlock isn’t a coating, so it can’t keep sprinkler water off your windows. To stop the spray at the source, turn or lower your sprinkler heads so the spray stops short of the house.

Not every outside haze is hard water. Dust from fields and construction, spring pollen and gray winter inversion days leave a dull film too, but that kind washes off with soapy water.

Can hard water stains be removed, or is my glass ruined?

It depends on how long the minerals have been there. Fresh, light spots can often come off with a vinegar mix and some patience; here’s how to get hard water spots off your windows. The longer they sit, the harder they get, and old spots can etch the glass for good.

Here’s how we handle them on an exterior window cleaning:

  • Light spots get worked on during every cleaning.
  • Heavier staining takes extra time, so our tech looks at it on site and prices it there.
  • Monthly and Quarterly members get hard water removal on up to 5 panes every visit at no charge.

Hard water removal isn’t guaranteed. Heavy, old buildup doesn’t always come all the way off, but we get it as close as we can.

Why does my glass feel rough even when it’s clean?

If the glass is still rough after the hard water is treated, that’s etching. When minerals sit on glass long enough, they eat into the surface. Etched glass looks cloudy and feels rough even when it’s perfectly clean, and no cleaner can bring it back. Fixing it takes polishing or new glass.

Fine scratches from steel wool, gritty powders or a razor blade on tempered glass catch the light like haze, and they can’t be cleaned out either. If we see etching or scratches, we note them, but we don’t repair them.

Streaks vs. haze: how to tell

Streaks are lines and smears; haze is an even film. Common causes of DIY streaks are too much cleaner, paper towels, a worn squeegee blade, and cleaning in hot sun that dries the glass before you wipe it. Our guide to cleaning windows without streaks, linked below, has the full method.

Hazy after a smoky summer?

A gray, greasy film that smears when you wipe it is often smoke residue. It comes off with soapy water, and heavy film can take two passes. Here’s how to clean wildfire smoke and ash off your windows.
