How to Get Hard Water Spots Off Your Windows
Those cloudy white spots are minerals left behind when water dries on glass. Fresh spots usually come off with a simple vinegar mix. The longer they sit, the harder they get, and old spots can etch the glass for good.
Where the spots come from
Most Treasure Valley water is hard: it carries calcium and other minerals. When sprinklers, a hose or a downspout splash your windows, the water evaporates and the minerals stay behind as white spots and streaks. Sprinklers are the usual culprit, because they hit the same windows over and over all summer.
How to remove fresh spots
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle.
- Protect what's below the window. Vinegar can damage natural stone sills and some finishes, so lay down a towel and wipe up drips.
- Spray the spots and let the mix sit for 3 to 5 minutes, keeping it wet so the vinegar can loosen the minerals.
- Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth or a non-scratch sponge, using small circles.
- Rinse with clean water, then squeegee or dry with a lint-free cloth so you don't leave new spots behind.
Stubborn spots may need a second round. Work in the shade if you can: the sun dries the mix before it has time to work.
What never to use on glass
- Steel wool, scouring pads or gritty powders. They scratch glass, and scratches can't be cleaned out.
- Razor blades on tempered glass. Tempered glass can have tiny bits of debris baked into the surface when it's made, and a blade can drag them across the pane and leave long scratches.
- Heavy-duty rust and lime removers near frames and seals. They can damage window frames, seals and screens.
When it's time to call a pro
If the spots don't budge after a couple of tries, the windows are up high, or there's just a lot of glass, call us. Light spots get worked on during every cleaning, heavier spots are priced on site, and our Monthly and Quarterly members get hard water removal on up to 5 panes every visit at no charge.
One honest note: if minerals sit on glass long enough, they can etch it. Etched glass feels rough even when it's clean, and no cleaner can bring it back; it has to be polished or replaced. That's why it pays to deal with spots early.
How to keep spots from coming back
- Adjust your sprinklers. Turn or lower the heads so the spray stops short of the house.
- Clean spots while they're fresh. A week-old spot comes off far easier than a season-old one.
- Ask about RainBlock. RainBlock is our pure water rinse: water filtered down to zero minerals, so the glass dries spot-free with no soap or residue left behind for dirt to cling to. It comes free with Monthly and Quarterly memberships.
