When Is the Best Time of Year to Clean Windows in Idaho?

For most homes in Boise and the Treasure Valley, the best times are late spring, once the pollen and cottonwood fluff settle, and fall, after sprinkler season ends. We clean all year, though, and every season has its reasons. Here’s how to pick your dates.

Spring: the big reset

Winter leaves its mark on glass. Gray inversion days, snow and rain leave windows dull and streaky, and screens hold a whole season of dust. Spring is the time to clean everything: inside and outside glass, screens and tracks, before you open the windows for summer.

The timing trick here is the cottonwoods. Every late spring, the trees along the Boise and Payette rivers drop fluff and pollen that stick to screens and glass. If you can only pick one spring date, aim for after the fluff settles, so your clean windows stay clean into summer.

Summer: sprinkler and smoke season

  • Sprinklers. Irrigation runs all summer, and the water that hits your windows dries into white mineral spots that get harder to remove every week they sit. Catching them early is easier on the glass. Monthly and Quarterly members get hard water removal on up to 5 panes every visit at no charge. Here’s how to get hard water spots off your windows.
  • Wildfire smoke. In some summers, smoke drifts into the valley and leaves a gray film on glass and ash on sills. Wait for the air to clear, then clean. Here’s how to clean smoke and ash off your windows.
  • Hot afternoons. Cleaning glass yourself? Do it in the morning or in the shade. Direct summer sun dries the cleaner on the glass before you can wipe it, and that’s where streaks come from.

Fall: the best time for a second cleaning

Fall is the other favorite, and for good reason. Once the sprinklers shut off for the year, new hard water spots stop showing up, so a fall cleaning stays clear. You get bright, clean glass for the holidays and for the short winter days when you want every bit of light. Late fall, after the leaves come down, is also the time for gutter cleaning, and you can add it to the same visit.

Winter: yes, we clean in winter

We clean year-round and just keep an eye on the weather. If it’s too cold, we move your cleaning to a warmer day. Winter is also a great time for interior windows: inside glass doesn’t care about the cold, and fingerprints and pet nose prints show up more in low winter sun.

So when should you book?

  • Once a year: late spring, after the cottonwood fluff. You start summer with clear glass and clean screens.
  • Twice a year: spring and fall. That’s exactly what our Biannual membership is built around.
  • Quarterly: once a season, for homes with sprinklers that reach the glass, homes near fields or construction, and anyone who wants clear windows all year. It’s our most popular membership.
