How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters in Boise?

Most homes in Boise and the Treasure Valley need their gutters cleaned once a year, in late fall after the leaves are down and before the snow comes. If tall trees or pines hang over your roof, plan on twice a year: late fall and again in spring.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Boise?

Go by the trees around your house, not the calendar:

  • Few or no trees nearby: once a year. Gutters still fill with wind-blown dust, seeds and grit. Even brand-new gutters collect dirt blown in from construction and open ground, so homes in the growing parts of Star, Kuna and Meridian still need a yearly cleaning.
  • Shade trees or pines over the roof: twice a year. Once in late fall after the last leaves drop, and again in spring.
  • Near the river: twice a year. Cottonwoods along the Boise and Payette rivers drop fluff in late spring and leaves in fall, so riverside homes in Boise, Garden City, Eagle and Emmett get two loads a year.

Not sure which one you are? Start with a late fall cleaning, then look in your gutters again in spring. If they’re already half full, you’re a twice-a-year house.

When is the best time to clean gutters here?

Late fall is the one that matters most. Wait until the trees over your roof are bare, so you’re not doing it twice, but try to beat the snow. Boise’s first measurable snow comes around November 23 on average, so aim for the gap between the last leaves and the first snow. Clear gutters going into winter give rain and snowmelt somewhere to go.

Spring is the second cleaning. After winter, gutters hold whatever the storms knocked loose. Wait until the cottonwood fluff settles in late spring, and one cleaning picks up both.

A good habit: book your gutters with your fall window cleaning. Clogged gutters can overflow in fall storms and send dirty water streaking down the windows below, so clearing them at the same time helps your clean glass stay clean. Having holiday lights hung this year too? Our Christmas light installs use roof-safe clips that never pull on your gutters.

Which trees fill gutters fastest?

Signs your gutters are clogged

  • Rain sheets over the front lip in a storm instead of running to the corner.
  • Grass, weeds or tiny trees are growing out of the gutter.
  • A gutter sags or is pulling away from the roof edge. Wet leaves and needles are heavy.
  • Dirty streaks show up on the siding or the windows right under the gutter line.

It doesn’t rain much here, so a clog can sit unnoticed for months. Next time it pours, walk around the house and watch the corners. Water spilling over the top is your answer.

Do clogged gutters cause ice dams?

Not on their own. An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the edge of the roof that keeps melting snow from draining off. The University of Minnesota Extension explains that they form when heat escaping from the house warms the upper roof above freezing while the edge stays below freezing. Snow melts up high and freezes again at the cold edge, and the water that backs up behind the ice can leak into the house and damage walls, ceilings and insulation. Watch for icicles: University of Missouri Extension calls icicles hanging from the roof overhang a warning sign of ice dams.

The lasting fix is in the attic: the same UMN page says ice dams can be prevented by controlling heat loss from the home. Clean gutters still matter. Overflowing gutters can freeze along the roof edge, and Missouri Extension notes that ice dams can lead to dislodged roof shingles and sagging gutters. Empty gutters going into winter are one less thing to go wrong.

Can you clean your gutters yourself?

Yes, if you’re comfortable on a ladder and your gutters are one story up. The ladder is the risky part, and NIOSH, the CDC’s workplace safety institute, points out that many ladder injuries happen at home. If you do it yourself:

  1. Set the ladder right. Put it on firm, level ground. NIOSH says to set an extension ladder at about a 75-degree angle. A ladder stand-off keeps the ladder from resting on the gutter itself.
  2. Keep your hands free. Don’t carry things while you climb. Hang a bucket from the ladder, or drop the debris onto a tarp below.
  3. Scoop, don’t stretch. Wear gloves and use a plastic scoop. Clean what’s in front of you, then climb down and move the ladder. NIOSH’s rule is simple: don’t overreach.
  4. Flush and watch. Run a garden hose at the far end and watch the water flow out. If the gutter is clear and water still won’t drain, the clog is probably in the downspout, which we don’t service; a hose run down from the top often pushes it through.
  5. Stay off the roof. Work from the ladder, and skip wet, icy or windy days.
