Christmas Lights in Star
Star opens the season with a tree lighting at the River House that has grown into a full day of fun. Past years have brought a pancake breakfast with the Grinch, a kids’ Reindeer Ramble at Freedom Park and a holiday market. After dark come fire pits, s’mores and story time with Santa. The lights in the trees stay up through December, all the way to the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Star also runs an annual Light Up Star holiday light contest. Anyone living inside city limits can nominate their own home or a neighbor’s, and judging happens on an evening in mid-December. Only outdoor displays count, and winners get a yard sign. Whether you enter or just want to enjoy the season, a clean, bright roofline is the place to start.
What Star Homes Need
Star has changed fast. The city notes its population has grown exponentially in recent years, and 2025 alone brought 820 new-home sales. Most of those were in busy new neighborhoods like Cresta Del Sol, Aliso Creek, Heirloom Ridge and Milestone Ranch, with river and estate homes at the top end. Star also sits on flat ground along the Boise River, so a lit roofline can be seen from a long way off. If your roof has peaks over the garage and porch, we measure each one so the strands fit tight. Front and sides suits most neighborhood lots, and an estate home may want Front, sides and back so it shows from every side.
When to Book in Star
Planning to enter Light Up Star? Book early so your lights are on before judging in mid-December. Our schedule fills as the holidays get closer, and fall is the easiest time to land a good date. Once the season is over, the lights come down on a date you choose, from just after New Year’s to well into January or February.
