How Does Christmas Light Removal Work in Boise?
If we hung your Christmas lights, we take them down too, on a date you pick, usually in January or February. We remove the lights, clips and extension cords, pack your lights into labeled bins and keep them in our storage unit until next season. Takedown and storage are free, and your home goes right back to normal.
Who takes down Christmas lights in Boise?
If you hire a company to hang your lights, ask before you book whether takedown is part of the job, so you know who’s climbing the ladder in January. With us, takedown comes with every install. You pick the date, and we put it on the calendar.
When do you take the lights down?
Whenever you’re ready: right after New Year’s or a few weeks later. Takedown usually lands in January or February. Need the lights up longer than usual? Tell us your preferred date and we’ll schedule the removal.

What happens on takedown day?
- We show up on your date. You picked it, and it’s on our calendar.
- Everything comes down. Lights, clips, extension cords, all of it, including the lights on any trees and bushes we wrapped.
- The clips come off with the lights. Our roof-safe clips grip your roofline without nails, screws or sticky residue. That means no holes in your shingles and nothing left pulling on your gutters.
- Your lights go into labeled bins. Every strand was custom-cut to fit your home, and it stays that way for next year.
- Your home goes back to normal. We leave it just the way we found it.
Where do my lights go after takedown?
Into our storage unit. Your lights stay there in labeled bins, organized and ready for next season, so they don’t take up room in your garage. Takedown and storage are free with every install.
Every fall we send you a quick text to get your lights back on the schedule. Because the strands are already cut to fit your roofline and peaks, next year’s install is simple.
Is it bad to leave Christmas lights up all year?
It’s hard on the lights, and it doesn’t save you the ladder work. Seasonal lights and clips are made to go up in the fall and come down after the holidays. Here’s what they’d be up against in the Treasure Valley:
- Spring wind. The National Weather Service in Boise says spring, from March to mid May, is the windiest time of year in Boise and the Treasure Valley, with strong west to northwest winds that can peak as high as 50 mph. Strands and clips left up take that beating.
- Summer sun. The same page describes many weeks of fine weather and abundant sunshine from spring through early fall. Months of sun are hard on wire, sockets and plastic clips.
- HOA rules. If you have an HOA, check how long it lets holiday decorations stay up.
- It’s still a ladder job. Lights left up have to come down sometime, and by then they’re weathered and harder to reuse.
Want lights that stay up all year? That’s a permanent lighting system, and we don’t install those. We hang seasonal lights and take them down every year.
How to take down Christmas lights yourself, safely
If you hung your own lights this year, taking them down is the same ladder work in reverse. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission counts about 160 Christmas decorating injuries every day of the holiday season, and nearly half involve falls. Its holiday season runs through January 31, so takedown time counts. A CDC study of holiday decorating falls, using the same November to January season, found that about 43% came from ladders.
- Pick a dry, calm day. Skip frosty mornings, wet or icy roofs and windy days. December and January here often bring long stretches of cloudy, foggy weather, so wait for a clear afternoon if you can.
- Unplug everything first. Unplug each strand at the outlet before you climb, and pull plugs by the plug, never the cord.
- Set the ladder right. OSHA’s extension ladder fact sheet says to set the base one-quarter of the ladder’s working length out from the wall, extend the top three feet above any surface you step onto, keep three points of contact, and keep ladders at least 10 feet from power lines. Keep your body inside the side rails, and carry tools in a belt, not your hands.
- Unclip, don’t yank. Pulling a strand off by force can snap clips, bend gutters and lift shingle edges. Take each clip off by hand, then move the ladder instead of reaching.
- Pack it for next year. Wrap each strand loosely around a piece of cardboard or a reel, and label where it went: front peak, garage, porch. Toss any strand with cracked wire or broken sockets. Store everything in a sealed bin somewhere dry.
Or skip all of it next year. When we hang your lights, takedown is already handled. Read hanging lights yourself vs. hiring a pro.
Why hand the whole season to a pro?
Takedown is the half of the job nobody thinks about in November. With us, the whole season is handled:
- A custom design, with every strand cut to fit your roofline and peaks.
- Bright, commercial-grade LED lights on roof-safe clips, with every strand tested on install day.
- Mid-season fixes if a strand goes dark or the weather knocks something loose.
- Takedown on your date, then free storage until next season.
- A quick text every fall to get you back on the schedule.
We’re locally owned and fully insured, and we answer every quote request within one business day, with zero pressure to book. See how it all works on our Christmas light installation page.
Clean windows once the lights come down
By the time the lights come down, winter has usually left your glass dull from dust, road grime and gray inversion days. Takedown is a good reminder to book a spring exterior window cleaning. If your home sits under tall trees, spring is a good time for a second gutter cleaning too.
