Who Hangs Christmas Lights in Boise? Your Options Compared

In Boise and the Treasure Valley, five kinds of people hang Christmas lights on homes: you, a handyman or gig-app helper, a lawn, landscaping or pest company that adds lights in winter, a window cleaner, or a dedicated holiday light installer. The right one for your house comes down to who brings the lights, who fixes a dark strand in December, who takes it all down in January, and who is insured to work on your roofline.

Your five options for hanging Christmas lights

From Boise and Meridian to Nampa and Emmett, you’ll find the same five options:

  • You. A ladder, a few boxes of lights and a free weekend.
  • A handyman or gig app. Someone you book for one visit to hang lights you bought.
  • Lawn, landscaping and pest companies. Their main work slows down in winter, so some add holiday lights.
  • Window cleaners. Some window cleaning companies, including us, also hang holiday lights.
  • Dedicated holiday light installers. Companies that make lights their main winter service.

Any of them can get lights onto a roofline. The difference shows up later: when a strand goes dark the week before Christmas, when wind knocks a run loose, and when it’s January and everything still has to come down.

What separates them

  • Who supplies the lights. Store-bought strands come in set lengths, and rooflines don’t.
  • Whether takedown is included, or it’s a second job to line up in January.
  • Who fixes a dark strand mid-season. Snow, wind and freezing nights are part of a Treasure Valley December, and someone has to come back.
  • Insurance and ladder experience. Hanging lights is ladder work at the edge of a roof.

Calling around? Here’s what to ask before you hire anyone.

Hanging them yourself

DIY works best on a single-story home with an easy eave, and plenty of people enjoy it. You supply the lights, you take them down, and you fix whatever goes dark. The ladder is the real cost: here’s what the injury numbers say, and how to stay safe. A few tips if you go for it:

  • Plug each strand in on the driveway before you climb, so a dead one never makes it onto the roof.
  • Hang them with clips made for shingles and gutters, never nails or staples.
  • Go early, on a dry, calm day. Boise’s first measurable snow comes around November 23 on average, and a frosty roofline is no place to be.

Can a handyman hang Christmas lights?

Yes. A handyman or gig-app helper can be a quick way to get an extra hand on the ladder. Ask about these first:

  • Lights: usually yours. You buy them and show them where they go.
  • Takedown: often a separate visit you set up yourself in January.
  • Dark strands: a fix usually means another booking, if the same person is free.
  • Insurance and ladders: this varies a lot. Ask for proof of insurance and how much roofline work they do.

Do landscapers hang Christmas lights?

Some do. When the grass stops growing, lawn, landscaping and pest control companies have less work, so some add Christmas lights. If you already trust the company, that’s a plus. Ask about:

  • Lights: some bring them and some hang yours. Ask which.
  • Takedown and fixes: are both in the quote, and who comes out if a strand goes dark?
  • Insurance and ladders: mowing and spraying are mostly ground-level jobs, and lights mean hours on a ladder at the roof edge. Ask whether their insurance covers roofline work.

Do window cleaners hang Christmas lights?

Many people don’t think of it, but it fits. Window cleaning is ladder work: second-story glass, tall entryways and, for us, gutters along the roofline too.

That’s us. Double Take is a window cleaning company based in Meridian, and we hang Christmas lights on homes and businesses across the valley. We can also clean your windows and gutters, so the glass behind the lights shines too. It’s best to clean the gutters before the lights go up. One window cleaning customer described the way we treat a home like this:

“Amazing communication, promptness and service! I appreciate the care and respect toward our home and the superior job done on my windows! What a treat!”

What about dedicated Christmas light companies?

Some companies make holiday lights their main winter service. Ask how ownership of the lights works, how fast they come back for a dark strand, and whether the quote is for a seasonal display or a permanent system. We don’t install permanent lights, only seasonal displays that come down on the date you pick. Here’s how the two kinds compare.

Which one is right for your house?

  • Single story, an easy eave, and you like the job: do it yourself, and do it early.
  • You own good lights and just want a hand: a handyman can work, as long as you plan for takedown and fixes.
  • Second story, steep peaks, trees to wrap, or you want it handled: hire someone who brings the lights, comes back when a strand goes dark, and takes it all down.

What you get when Double Take hangs your lights

  • Lights that fit. We measure your roofline and peaks and custom-cut every strand, so no extra cords or spare lights hang off the house.
  • Commercial-grade LED lights on a weather-ready install built for Idaho winters.
  • Roof-safe clips with no nails, no screws and no sticky residue. They never pull on your gutters.
  • Every strand tested on install day, and we walk the display with you before we leave.
  • Mid-season fixes. If a strand goes dark or the weather knocks something loose, call us and we’ll come back to fix it.
  • Free takedown and storage. We take everything down on a date you pick and keep your lights in labeled bins in our storage unit until next season.
  • Fully insured, with background-checked techs.

The lights come with the install. Ask how ownership works when you get your quote. Here’s more on whether installers provide the lights. We also hang wreaths and garland and wrap trees and bushes. Here’s how an install works, start to finish.
